In 1999, the predecessor company that had belonged to Magyar Villamos Művek (Hungarian Electric Works - MVM) was transformed into a company limited by shares under the name Budapesti Elektromos Művek Rt (Budapest Electric Works). RWE Plus AG, and then Energie Baden Württemberg AG, the current key owners, have appeared in the ownership structure following the privatisation of the company. This supplier of electrical power operates in Budapest, Pest county and parts of the Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Nógrád counties. In almost all areas, ELMÜ operates in close cooperation with ÉMÁSZ, a partnership undertaking under the same ownership, including RWE. The two companies have jointly established Magyar Áramszolgáltató Kft (Hungarian Power Supply Company). This company aims to gain customers in the liberalised electrical energy market, as well as to maintain and increase the market share of the ELMÜ/ÉMÁSZ Group.
